After running up a big offensive class for 2024 the Buckeyes are starting to hammer the trail on the defensive side of the ball and that has been bolstered by the commitment of Cleveland Glenville cornerback Bryce West.
The 6-foot, 175-pounder really was considered a must get being an in-state player at such of position of need as the Buckeyes are very young in their cornerback room. West is ranked the No. 3 cornerback in the nation by Rivals, and the No. 4 corner by ESPN.
West held more than 30 reported offers and many in the Michigan camp thought that they might be able to breakthrough and pull a Glenville target away from Ohio State, but that was not the case as Ryan Day and the Ohio State coaches were able to hold on to the talented Tarblooder.
West has solid size and speed as Ohio State has proven through the years to prefer the ‘6-foot corner’. West has track speed as he is a 10.9 100-meter runner. He also is not afraid to show the physicality that is needed to be a high-level corner but will have some refinements to make once he gets into the college game, as comes with almost every player out of the high school ranks.
Over the course of West’s junior season, he did not allow a passing touchdown to be scored against him while he was responsible for four interceptions on a Glenville team that finally broke through and gave head coach Ted Ginn Sr. his first state championship title.
The Buckeyes signed a pair of corners in the class of 2023 with Calvin Simpson-Hunt and Jermaine Mathews. There will be a need for no less than three in this class and the addition of West gives the Buckeyes a strong start to filling the ranks with Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock proving to be the elder statesmen of the room and only joining the program as members of the class of 2021.
We will have plenty more on this addition including what this means for Ohio State’s corner recruiting and a more in-depth look at what West does well and what he needs to work on during his senior season at Glenville.
Keep it locked in here at BuckeyeHuddle.com for all of that and so much more.
