Transfer Defensive Tackle Tywone Malone Loses Black Stripe

Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Tywone Malone is the second Ole Miss transfer to lose his black stripe this year, joining former Rebels cornerback teammate Davison Igbinosun, who lost his stripe back in late March.

Every new Buckeye has a black stripe placed down the middle of his helmet, including transfers. The stripe is removed when the new Buckeyes prove themselves on the practice field and off of it.

Malone transferred to Ohio State after spring ball, so he has only been on campus for a couple of months. He opened fall camp near the back of the line, but quickly moved up the ranks. In fact, due to an injury to junior defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, Malone was working with the first team before the first practice was over.

Malone also played baseball at Ole Miss, but now is focused fully on football, which has defensive line coach Larry Johnson excited about his potential.

“He never had his foot fully in football,” Johnson said after spring ball. “I think this is the first time that he’s just going to play football and concentrate on football. And so I think we’ll see a different athlete. I think he didn’t do spring ball his first year there, he played baseball. So that had a lot to do with his development and where he’s at right now. Certainly, he’s got a great upside to where he’s gonna go.”

Malone is expected to be part of the Buckeyes’ defensive tackle rotation this year.

There are now three transfers remaining who have yet to lose their black stripes, not counting true freshman Nigel Glover, who originally enrolled at Northwestern.

Safety Ja’Had Carter has been running with the first team all camp long, so it would seem his stripe removal should be coming shortly. Cornerback Lorenzo Styles, Jr. was a post-spring arrival and he’s making the move to a new position, so his stripe removal may take a bit more time. Long-snapper John Ferlmann is also working to have his stripe removed.
