Transfer Safety Ja'Had Carter, Freshman Defensive End Arvell Reese Lose Black Stripes

Two more Buckeyes have been welcomed to the Brotherhood.

Following Ohio State football practice on Tuesday, senior transfer safety Ja’Had Carter and freshman defensive end Arvell Reese had the black stripes removed from their helmets, making them official Buckeyes.

Carter transferred in from Syracuse, where he was a three-year starter for the Orange. He arrived in the winter, but suffered an injury during spring, missing half of camp. Carter played nickel in the spring, but opened in fall camp as the Buckeyes’ No. 1 free safety.

Carter has also been a little banged up in fall camp. He is currently competing with sixth-year senior Josh Proctor and true freshman Malik Hartford for the starting free safety job.

Arvell Reese came to Ohio State as a four-star linebacker, but moved to defensive end in fall camp. Even before practice started, head coach Ryan Day singled him out early on as somebody who was impressing the coaching staff.

Reese could eventually move back to linebacker, but he has clearly taken to the defensive line. He brings speed and physicality to the position. The Buckeyes are deep at defensive end this year, but it may not be that way next year.

Reese is the 11th member of Ohio State’s 21-person signing class to lose his black stripe.
