WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Buckeyes will be without starting wide receiver Emeka Egbuka when Ohio State takes on the Purdue Boilermakers today.
Egbuka injured his leg in last week’s game against Maryland. Buckeye head coach Ryan Day has since said he doesn’t believe it will be a long-term issue.
Egbuka is the Buckeyes’ second-leading receiver, posting 22 receptions for 303 yards and three touchdowns this season. As the starting slot receiver for Ohio State, much of his duties will likely be handed down to sixth-year receiver Xavier Johnson, who has four receptions for 58 yards this season.
The absence of Egbuka could also increase the playing time for true freshmen receiver Carnell Tate, who is fifth on the team with five catches and 83 yards receiving. He has also caught one touchdown pass.
Running back Miyan Williams is also out this week with an undisclosed injury. His role has been greatly reduced this season compared to the 2022 season where he led the Buckeyes with 825 yards rushing. This season Williams is third on the team with 25 carries for 96 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Williams’ departure could be offset by the return of leading rusher TreVeyon Henderson, who missed last week’s game. Day has said throughout the week that he expects Henderson to return. According to Ohio State’s availability report, however, Henderson is still listed as questionable.
If Henderson can’t go, second-leading rusher Chip Trayanum would get the bulk of the carries. Sophomore running back Dallan Hayden is being redshirted this year after rushing for 553 yards last season, but he can still play in four games and maintain his redshirt. Redshirt sophomore Evan Pryor is also available if needed.
Tight end Joe Royer is also listed as out this week.
