Postgame Updates: Ryan Day Discusses Buckeyes’ Dominating Win Over Michigan State

COLUMBUS — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day took to the podium following the Buckeyes’ 38-3 win over Michigan State on Saturday. He discussed the stellar performances of quarterback Kyle McCord and wide receiver Marvin Harrison. He also heaped praise on his defense’s effort throughout the game. The highlights of everything he had to say can be found below.

  • They wanted to get Marvin Harrison involved early. It was great to have Cade Stover back. The reverse with Harrison was really well executed.
  • Tommy Eichenberg is going to be week to week. Lathan Ransom is more of a long-term injury. Every year you need depth to step up.
  • They work every week to get everybody involved. You design plays for guys but sometimes the play will end up going somewhere else. They have stuff designed for Julian Fleming and Emeka Egbuka. “You try to do everything you can to put guys into positions to make plays.”
  • There were times Marvin Harrison was double covered but he still got open. He ran right through double coverage on the deep pass in the third quarter.
  • Good to see the offense get off to a fast start.
  • “I just feel like we’re getting all of our pieces back” offensively. You’re seeing their identity. He felt like something like this was coming up.
  • Do you try to help Marvin Harrison’s Heisman campaign? No, you can’t do that. That award is for the most outstanding player, not the player with the best stats. “We try not to focus on that.” They just look for the best opportunities to move the ball down the field.
  • The score may not have been competitive in the second half, but the snaps were competitive to all of the young guys who got experience. Some of them flashed. They’re all gradeable snaps on film. The score should have nothing to do with it. Like Calvin Simpson-Hunt taking on a screen play being thrown out there unexpectedly.
  • Kyle McCord’s feet were better this week. The game is slowing down for him. He threw some nice balls tonight.
  • What do games like tonight tell you about bigger games? Coming off of last week they were focused on playing their best in November. You play for championships in November. “We wanted to take a step this week.” They cut back on practice a little bit this week.
