It was a short run at Ohio State for cornerback Ryan Turner who has effectively ended his Ohio State career by announcing his intentions to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. The 5-foot-11, 189-pounder out of Hollywood (Fla.) was a four-star commit coming out of Chaminade-Madonna high school.
Turner played in four games in 2022, maintaining his red shirt under NCAA regulations. He followed that up in 2023 with just appearing in two games. He will have three years to play three years.
Ohio State could see major movement at the corner position this offseason as both Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock each have decisions to make about the 2024 season, staying or leaving.
The Buckeyes saw a major improvement in the secondary this past season, No. 3 in the nation in passing yards allowed and No. 1 in pass efficiency defense. Unfortunately for Ohio State, the Buckeyes ran out of steam against Michigan in the finale, most notably in the second half of the game where the Buckeyes were hard pressed to get a service break.
Turner should not have any issue finding a new spot as a heavily recruited player coming out of high school. With the emergence of Jermaine Mathews and Ohio State only getting to see a little of Calvin Simpson-Hunt, it may have been difficult for Turner to push through into the starting rotation in Jim Knowles’ defense.
We will continue to follow developments as teams see movement with the portal, both into it and out of it.
