The Buckeyes were not particularly deep at linebacker and those numbers have become just a little bit leaner with the news that Ironton (Ohio) linebacker Reid Carrico has hit the transfer portal prior to the end of the 2023 season.
The former four-star linebacker was part of Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class and has seen limited action thus far in his Ohio State career. Carrico was held to just special teams work the past two seasons as Ohio State’s defensive system generally only has two linebackers on the field in most instances. With Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers locking down their spots and Cody Simon on deck as the third backer, there were not many snaps to go around for anyone else.
Ohio State’s defensive system does not appear to be changing in terms of how it is structurally put together, so Carrico is off to his next stop looking for playing time with a couple of seasons of eligibility left to be played.
Carrico will bring a big-bodied linebacker to his next stop at 6-foot-2, 230-pounds as well as a tremendous student as Carrico has already been noted as an Ohio State scholar athlete.
