Kansas State quarterback Will Howard is taking an official visit to Ohio State according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The visit will happen in the “coming days” per Thamel.
Buckeye Huddle sources have indicated that Howard and OSU have been in contact for weeks, and this visit is the next logical step in Ohio State possibly adding a fourth scholarship quarterback to their team.
Howard (6-5 242) has 27 career starts in his four years at Kansas State. This past season, however, was the first year that he actually entered fall camp as the Wildcats’ starting quarterback.
Howard started every regular season game for Kansas State this season, leading the Wildcats to an 8-4 record. All four losses came by eight points or less, including a 30-27 loss at Missouri. Howard threw for 2,643 yards while completing 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He completed 61.3% of his passes and also rushed for 351 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Howard entered the transfer portal after the regular season.
The Buckeyes currently have three quarterbacks on scholarship. Devin Brown started the Cotton Bowl last week as a redshirt freshman. He was replaced in the second quarterback by true freshman Lincoln Kienholz due to injury. They will add true freshman Air Noland next week as well.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day prefers to have four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, so adding a player from the portal is likely to happen in some form or fashion.
If the Buckeyes add Howard, he will enter a quarterback competition immediately as Ohio State looks to replace departed starter Kyle McCord, who entered the portal one month ago.
