Ohio State has been on a recruiting tear and on Saturday night added to its offensive numbers with the addition of Wayne (N.J.) wide receiver De’zie Jones, a commitment that may have come out of nowhere in the eyes of fans.
The 6-foot, 180-pounder held more than a dozen offers coming out of DePaul Catholic high school including ones from Penn State, Texas and Florida to name just a few. But, he is not a new name for Ohio State as the Buckeyes offered the talented four-star in the end of September, 2023.
Other names may be getting more mention but when wide receivers coach Brian Hartline identifies a player that he wants to land at the wide receiver position, we know how things usually turn out.
Jones is the first receiver in the Ohio State class after the departure of Jayvan Boggs. It is not known how deep Ohio State will go at the position for recruiting but with names like Jaime Ffrench, Dakorien Moore and others on Ohio State’s radar as well, with several top 2025 receivers on campus this weekend for a visit, the timing may have been perfect for Jones to stake his claim to a spot in the Ohio State class.
As a sophomore, Jones had 59 catches for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns, setting a school record for most receiving yards in a season by a sophomore. Jones was consistent in his junior year with 56 catches, but his yardage went down slightly at 898 yards along with six touchdowns.
The Buckeyes will lose Emeka Egbuka and Jayden Ballard after this season, leaving just seven scholarship receivers set to be on the roster for 2025, provided no transfers occur. It could be a big number for the Buckeyes in terms of how many players may be part of this 2025 class.
Jones got there first, who will get there next?
