A key piece of the Ohio State men’s basketball team is hitting the transfer portal according to multiple reports. Roddy Gayle is looking to transfer from Ohio State after playing for two seasons with the Buckeyes.
Gayle has played in 71 games for the Buckeyes and saw his numbers go up from year-one to year-two as he averaged close to 31 minutes per game, 13.5 points per game and 4.6 boards per game.
The Niagara Falls (N.Y.) native scored in double figures in his last three games in an Ohio State uniform, including 11 in Ohio State’s season-ending loss to Georgia in the NIT third round.
Gayle really announced himself to the nation at the end of his freshman season when he first started to see meaningful playing time in the Big Ten Tournament and scored 15 points against Michigan State in an upset win and 20 against Purdue in the semifinals. Ohio State would go on to lose that game, but it appeared that Ohio State had found its next big scorer.
Things would pick up as he would score 17 in the 2023-24 season opener and would score 23 points against Alabama and 32 points against West Virginia before the start of the new year.
Gayle would score in double-figures in 27 of 35 starts for Ohio State but with the coaching change at the top of the program, there is always a concern with what the future may hold.
The Buckeyes have already received commitments from Bruce Thornton, Felix Okpara and Devin Royal to return for the upcoming season along with the portal addition of one-time Buckeye Meechie Johnson.
With more decisions still set to be determined, it is unclear just how much work Ohio State will have to do in the portal with the departure of four players who walked for senior day along with the growing list of portal departures.
The Buckeyes will bring in two signees this year with Juni Mobley and Colin White, but there will certainly be some portal additions for Jake Diebler as he prepares for his first full season as the Ohio State head coach.
We will continue to monitor the comings and goings from the Ohio State basketball team over the coming days as the upcoming portal season promises to be a wild one on all fronts.
