Ohio State linebacker Tommy Eichenberg was never much of a public speaker during his time at Ohio State, but he was one hell of a linebacker. That’s why he is now property of the Las Vegas Raiders who selected Tommy with the No. 148 pick of the 5th round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Fans will never remember Eichenberg for anything that he said, but people will not soon forget the production as Eichenberg once again was named a 1st-team All-Big Ten player in the 2023 season.
Eichenberg was second on the team in 2023 in total tackles with 82, one off the pace of fellow linebacker Steele Chambers, but Tommy racked up his numbers in 10 games where Steele and many other starters played 13.
The Ohio State linebacker was part of the class of 2019 and was briefly committed to Boston College before flipping over to the Buckeyes.
After a redshirt season in 2019 and extremely limited action in 2020, Eichenberg would rack up more than 260 total tackles for his career along with 3.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions.
Nothing about Eichenberg’s game is flashy but doubters continue to be proven wrong when it comes to Tommy’s ability to impact a game. His no-nonsense style of play made him an intriguing prospect for NFL teams, even in this day and age of so much more self-expression by players after their successes.
Ohio State has not had a linebacker taken in the past two drafts and the last one taken off the board was Baron Browning by the Denver Broncos.
The Raiders would be thrilled if they could get similar production out of Eichenberg, but the two are entirely different players. But we are not selling on Eichenberg’s prospects of making the 53-man roster when it comes time for cutdown day.
