Xavier Johnson did not get picked in the NFL Draft but he still has an opportunity as he is going to get a shot with the Buffalo Bills according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz.
It appeared to be an uphill battle for Johnson, who did not have an invite to Indianapolis and the NFL Scouting Combine, but did take part in Ohio State’s Pro Day. The Buckeyes only had four players taken in the 2024 Draft.
Johnson did not have a page in the NFL Draft guide like many of his former teammates did. In a year that was not an exceptionally deep draft class for the Buckeyes, it was easy for many pundits to overlook a player who didn’t exactly have a position at Ohio State.
In fact, he filled whatever role was needed of him, be it at receiver or running back. It would not come as a surprise if Johnson opted to drive the team bus if asked.
Johnson turned down scholarship offers to walk-on at Ohio State coming out of high school. Johnson would record no official offensive stats in his first two seasons with the Buckeyes and would have just four carries during the 2021 campaign.
The past two seasons would see just 26 receptions along with 40 carries, totaling for three touchdowns, all scored in 2023.
Despite the lack of production, the Buckeyes would put X out there in the highest of leverage situations including the Peach Bowl against Georgia when Johnson would hit the spin button and score a memorable touchdown in a game where the Buckeyes came up just short with a shot at the national championship on the line.
The NFL has a much smaller roster than college football with 53 spots versus 85 scholarships and more than 100 when you count walk-ons. The ability to do multiple things plays a huge role and Johnson should be able to fit that bill, be it on offense, special teams or both.
Keep it locked in here at BuckeyeHuddle as we continue to track the draft picks along with the free agency invites as we wrap up the 2024 NFL Draft.
