The Buckeyes have only offered a small handful of safeties in the 2026 recruiting class, and one of those talented few is Buford High School’s Nassir McCoy.
Ohio State is not alone in offering McCoy, however, as Georgia, Alabama, Michigan, LSU, Texas, and several other major programs have done the same.
Buford High School has a number of top prospects, which is why it was one of the key stops on Buckeye Huddle’s ongoing Southern Swing tour. Nassir McCoy (6-2 180) was offered by the Buckeyes last week as head coach Ryan Day and safeties coach Matt Guerrieri gave him the news.
“The feeling was crazy,” he said. “When I got a call from Ryan Day and Coach Matt G, it was insane. It’s really a childhood dream being [offered] from Ohio State. Getting an offer from Ohio State, it’s kind of insane.”
Even though McCoy admittedly “grew up a Dawg” and rooted for Georgia, the Buckeyes have been right there for him as well. In fact, you can put him on the side of the ledger that believes Ohio State is the real DBU. He cites former Buckeye cornerback Denzel Ward as a player he enjoys watching.
Something else he enjoys is the contact he is having with the OSU coaches right now.
“I’ve talked to the whole defensive staff,” McCoy said. “I talk to all of them guys almost every day. They’re checking in on me. I’m always checking in on them. They’re checking in on how the family’s doing.”
It’s not just the coaches checking in on him, however, as former Buford teammate Eddrick Houston does the same. Houston is a true freshman for the Buckeyes this year and he is now recruiting McCoy to join him in Columbus.
“Eddrick tells me every day it’s the place to be,” he said. “He tells me it’s like home. He tells me it’s like coming from here to there. It’s exactly like home. He tells me that’s the place to be.”
McCoy plans to make a trip to Ohio State in June for a camp. He is also excited to see the tradition around OSU because he’s been watching it from afar since he was a kid.
“It’s Ohio State, man,” he said. “It’s The Ohio State University. Don’t nobody else have that. They’re just different from the start.”
Ohio State is not the only solid relationship that he has, of course. Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Michigan, and others are recruiting him very diligently as well.
You can check out the entirety of Buckeye Huddle’s interview with Nassir McCoy (and his younger brother) below. He discusses more on Ohio State, his current timeline, what he’s working on right now, and more.
