Catching Up With Ohio State Commit Devin Sanchez

HOUSTON, Texas — Ohio State has several commitments from five-star prospects in the 2025 recruiting class but landing Houston (TX) North Shore cornerback Devin Sanchez was quite a coup. With offers from around the nation, the Buckeyes were able to win what was one of the most fiercely competitive recruiting battles of the cycle.

And in a landscape where things never seem to be completely shutdown until paperwork is signed, Sanchez has managed to keep his process drama free.

“What really shut it down was the spring game,” Sanchez told BuckeyeHuddle.com on our Southern Swing. “Ever since then it’s just been quiet. I’ll get a text here and there (from opposing coaches) but it’s just quiet. I’m just living life right now and ready to get (to Columbus) in January.”

The time Sanchez has saved not having to worry about the recruiting process has allowed him to focus on his own game and development. With what will likely be a slew of NFL departures from the Ohio State secondary after the season, Sanchez is uniquely situated as an early enrollee to come in and make an impact.

“I see a big opportunity for me to get out there on the field early,” he explained. “Coming into the spring, guys like Denzel (Burke) are going to be gone, so that’s one spot that’s going to be open. Then hopefully IGB (Davison Igbinosun) has a great season and takes off too and that would leave two spots open. I feel like if I come in and compete, even if IGB doesn’t leave, the way I just come in and compete and keep my head down, I’m going to win a spot regardless. That’s just the mindset I have. I don’t like when people play in front of me. No shade to the guys already there, but I’m going to lose my black stripe. I’m not going the whole spring without losing my black stripe.”

Though Sanchez is fully locked in with the Buckeyes, the coaching staff hasn’t taken that for granted. The conversations with defensive backs coach Tim Walton are still occurring on a daily basis, just maybe with a bit of a different tone.

“Me and coach Walton talk every day,” he explained. “The conversations are different now that I’ve been committed so long. I’ve been up there six times. It’s just a different type of relationship that I have with coach Walton. I know his whole family now, all of his kids, his wife, they’re like another family to me.”

Sanchez will be back on campus for his official visit the weekend of June 21st and he’ll get to put his recruiting hat on as well with several key undecided targets expected to be in Columbus that weekend as well.

“I’m going to be trying to get some guys,” Sanchez said. “But I won’t be by myself in all of that. Tavien (St. Clair) is going to be there too and he’s a big part of all of that. He’s just like me, so me and him, we’re going to try to get these guys. We want to dominate for the next three or four years so, whoever is uncommitted up there, just be ready because you’re going to hear from me.”
