LEWISVILLE, Texas – If there is a position that Ohio State fans have not needed to worry about on the recruiting trail over the past several seasons it is wide receiver, but the Buckeyes are in an unusual spot with just one receiver committed going into June.
Brian Hartline and the Buckeyes hope to change that with the start of official visit season and someone who is wasting little time getting back up to Columbus is Lucas (Texas) wideout Daylan McCutcheon. The four-star wideout from Lovejoy high school is one of the top receivers in a state deep with talent at the position and has caught the eye of many of the top programs.
We caught up with McCutcheon on the final day of our Southern Swing working out with one of the nation’s top receiver trainers on a hot Texas afternoon, still looking to refine his game and get ready for a big senior season.
The 5-foot-11 wideout will be visiting Ohio State the weekend of May 31st and will not be the only Texan on campus that weekend, joining players like Dakorien Moore, Henry Fenuku and others.
Does it make any difference making an official visit of some distance with players ‘from back home’?
“Yeah, that definitely makes me a little bit more comfortable knowing people from this area that are going up there on the visit,” McCutcheon said. “Just people I know I can talk to.”
The Ohio State coaches will keep all of the players busy during their visits, so there won’t be much downtime to think about the distance at that point. McCutcheon knows just how far away Ohio State is from his DFW-area home, having made multiple trips to Ohio State in the past. McCutcheon doesn’t believe that distance will play much of a factor in his ultimate decision.
A big visit to Ohio State took place last season during Ohio State’s home win over Penn State and being able to experience an Ohio State home game had a big impact on McCutcheon.
“The main thing I remember is the atmosphere, how electric it was during the game, because the game was pretty tight, and I liked the way how the crowd was, how the game was set, and that definitely left a mark in my head,” McCutcheon said.
He then followed that up with a spring visit earlier this year, a different backdrop. There was more time to spend with people without a game to worry about and there was a chance to really see what a practice looked like, especially if a decision for Ohio State would put McCutcheon in that spot a year from now.
“I was very impressed that their practice is all competitive-based,” McCutcheon added. “Everybody’s getting better each and every day. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a starter or a backup, no matter what, you’re getting work in. So that’s definitely one thing that I was very impressed by.”
Where do the Buckeyes see McCutcheon fitting in on the field if he were to ultimately pick the Buckeyes and enroll prior to the 2025 season?
“He definitely sees me more as a slot type of guy that can move inside and outside,” McCutcheon said.
The Buckeyes have had success with players like that with Emeka Egbuka and another Texan, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, coming to mind.
But it will be a challenge as many other major programs are going to get to shoot their shot with official visits set for USC, Texas and Florida State.
