COLUMBUS – Four-star linebacker Anthony Davis wasn’t looking for an offer when he made it to Ohio State’s Wednesday came, already having one in his pocket. But the 6-foot-2 linebacker wasn’t going to just show up and watch from the sidelines, he was there to compete.
It is that kind of drive that has made Davis a top player nationally in the class of 2026 and one of the top players on deck at an always talented Grayson high school outside of Atlanta.
It is still early, especially for an out-of-state school, but Ohio State is very much in the race in this recruitment and Ohio State linebacker’s coach James Laurinaitis is a major factor in all of this.
“Everything impresses me (about Ohio State),” Davis said. “Coach Laurinaitis, he’s a great coach because he did it before, and stuff like that. I like how hands-on he is. Before he showed the drill, he did it, so that’s really good.”
We had a chance to catch up with Davis after his spring game as part of our Southern Swing, you can get caught up with that exclusive interview below.
Davis’s interest in Ohio State is real and dates back prior to the opening of his recruitment. As a class of 2026, Davis is not as old as many of the readers of this article. Who is the player that Davis remembers most when he started really focusing on Ohio State?
“Chase Young,” Davis said to the moaning of the assembled reporters who all felt very old with that news. “Yes sir.”
Davis also made it to the Ohio State Spring Game earlier this year and had a chance to see how serious Ohio State fans take their football.
“I came to the spring game, it was 80,000 people at the spring game,” Davis said. “That’s crazy to me.”
There already is a familiarity with Ohio State and Davis, with several visits under his belt so far. For most players from outside of the region, there is a need to try and see everything on a visit, not knowing the next time you might get a chance to check things out.
Davis already knows what Ohio State has to offer, has already had a chance to get familiar with the campus, and just the overall culture of the Buckeyes’ program.
That really allowed Davis the chance to focus on his on-field performance and he did not disappoint as one of the most talented players on the fields of the WHAC.
Make no mistake, this is no slam dunk with Davis sitting on 30-some offers already at this point. Davis has plans to check out Auburn in the near future for a football event and other schools will continue to keep swinging.
But if you are an Ohio State fan, you have to like the chances as things stand now. Davis plans on coming back to check out a football game in the fall.
“They’re up there, for sure,” Davis said. “They’re (on) top of the list.”
