The third of Ohio State’s six one-day camps took place on Tuesday and one of the standouts on the day has not yet even played a high school game.
Eric McFarland (5-8 170) will be a freshman at IMG Academy this fall and already holds offers from the likes of Ohio State, Georgia, Arizona, Florida State, and others. On Tuesday, McFarland showcased the elite quickness and ball skills that earned him those offers.
There are more than 1,200 days between now and when Eric McFarland will be able to sign with a university, but already two schools are standing out above the others.
“My dream school right now is LSU. I’m waiting on that [offer],” he said. “[Ohio State] is my second dream school, so I’m going to pick either Ohio State or LSU.”
Why those two schools?
“Because LSU and Ohio State are both receiver universities,” he explained. “You’ve got people that came from LSU like Odell [Beckham], Jarvis Landry, Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson. Then you got here JJ [Smith], Carnell [Tate], Jaxon Smith-Njigba. You got a lot of people that came here too. So I want to be a part of that.”
Ohio State receivers coach Brian Hartline put McFarland and other receivers through several workouts and drills on the day, passing along knowledge along the way. For McFarland, it was advice on dropping his hips and shoulders and staying dedicated to getting better.
That dedication also shows up in the film room where he has spent hours watching and learning from current Buckeyes and former Florida high school receivers Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, and Jeremiah “JJ” Smith.
McFarland is from Las Vegas but attending IMG Academy in Florida. Many prospects camp at Ohio State in order to earn his offer. He already has his offer, so why did he decide to make the trip to Columbus and work out anyway?
“I wanted to show that I was the best receiver and why I earned this offer,” he said.
And did he feel like he accomplished that goal?
“Yes sir.”
