Archie Griffin is dotting the i.
Ohio State announced Thursday that Buckeye legend and college football’s only two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin is going to dot the i in Script Ohio at halftime of OSU’s season opener against Akron on August 31.
The dotting of the i is generally done by a senior sousaphone player. The honor has only been bestowed upon non-band members a few times previously. It is considered the greatest gesture the Ohio State Marching Band can extend to a non-band member.
Previous non-band members to receive the honor include comedian Bob Hope (1978), former Ohio State head coach Woody Hayes (1983), golfer Jack Nicklaus (2006), Senator John and Annie Glenn (2009), Marching Band director emeritus Jon R. Woods (2011), and former Ohio State head coach Earle Bruce (2016).
Griffin is being honored for his service to the university and his long-time support of the Marching Band. The band’s sousaphone players surprised Griffin with the offer earlier this month.
“The opportunity, in Ohio Stadium, to dot the “i” is a very special honor,” said Griffin. “I know that Woody was proud to have had that opportunity, and I am following in his footsteps and am extremely proud of this opportunity.”
Griffin is still the Buckeyes’ all-time leading rusher with 5,589 career rushing yards. He led Ohio State in rushing all four years of his Buckeye career (1972-75) and won the Heisman in 1974 and 1975.
Griffin’s 34 games with 100 yards rushing is still a Buckeye record, as are his 31-consecutive 100-yard rushing games.
