It has been a long journey for Ohio State defender Kourt Williams and on the eve of the Buckeyes opening up Fall Practice 2024, he has decided that it is time to call it a career.
Williams went to Instagram to announce his intentions of retiring after an injury plagued career never found much footing.
“4 knee surgeries & 3 shoulder surgeries – In these 5 years, there’s been a lot of light and a lot of dark,” Williams would go on to say in his post. “But I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Williams’ career ends with 32 tackles, 23 solo, a sack, and a pass defended.
The Ohio State linebacker earned his degree in Communications in the spring of 2023 and was listed as a Graduate Student as part of Ohio State’s recruiting class of 2020.
Williams was a top-20 player out of the state of California coming out of perennial powerhouse St. John Bosco. It was a huge recruiting win for the Buckeyes but then the injuries would start.
Williams would miss the 2020 season due to injury and then would go on to see very limited action in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, just recording stats in three games before fate would intervene again.
Kourt would see a move from the defensive backfield to linebacker but didn’t even really have a chance to try things out at that position as a torn ACL during the 2023 season would put Williams back in the trainer’s room.
There was hope that Williams might be able to see time in the 2024 season but after much thought and consideration, the decision was made to hang it up and move on to the next chapter of his life.
The Buckeyes start fall practices on Thursday morning and we will have a chance to talk to head coach Ryan Day to get his reactions to Williams’ retirement from the game of football.
