The Ohio State football program has announced its captains for the 2024 season. Four captains have been named, and all four are seniors. Linebacker Cody Simon, defensive end Jack Sawyer, receiver Emeka Egbuka, and running back TreVeyon Henderson were all voted 2024 captains by their teammates.
“The great news is we have a great group of leaders,” head coach Ryan Day told his team. “Just because you are not a captain doesn’t mean you’re not a leader. You’re still a leader. Leadership is earned and a lot of you guys have earned leadership. There are a lot of captains on this team. The players did a great job voting.”
All four are first-time captains for the Buckeyes.
Earlier in the day, Cody Simon was also named the recipient of this year’s Block O jersey.
Simon is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree who now has a degree in finance. He has been one of the Buckeyes’ top five tacklers twice in the past three years.
Sawyer is the lone Ohioan named captain this year. He has played in every game each of the past three seasons, starting 13 times. Sawyer led the Buckeyes with 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks last year.
Henderson has led the Buckeyes in two of his three years at Ohio State, including 1,255 yards rushing as a true freshman in 2021. He has started 29 times in his 31 career games.
Egbuka enters his senior season with an opportunity to finish his career as the Buckeyes’ all-time leading receiver in terms of catches and yards. He dealt with injuries last season, but as a sophomore in 2022 he caught 74 passes for 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns.
