Sometimes a 35-point win is not enough and for many Ohio State fans, the win over Marshall was good but not good enough.
Have no fear, the coaches seemed to feel the same way, Jim Knowles did not name a defensive player of the game and the Tuesday press conference just didn’t seem to be as joyful as some other weeks.
We don’t get the option when it comes to the Hot 11 to take a week off though (granted, I took more than a season off before bringing it back) and we have had some shakeup in the rankings.
There is a new No. 1, two new names entered the rankings and nobody maintained their spot after the initial rankings (coming post-Western Michigan).
Without any further delay, let’s check out how the rankings shape up this week going into the Big Ten opener against Michigan State.
Rank | Player | The Details | Last Week |
1. | Quinshon Judkins (80) | 14 carries for 173 yards and two scores is good enough most weeks for a jump in the rankings. The entire Ohio State running game is on point, but Judkins is really starting to stand out. | 5th |
2. | Jeremiah Smith (79) | Ho hum, another touchdown for Jeremiah. He was only targeted four times, catching three passes and his 53-yard score looked routine to many, but there aren’t many out there that can do what he does. | 1st |
3. | Lathan Ransom (63) | Ransom led the team in tackles with eight and most teams would be concerned with a safety leading the way but that is not the case at Ohio State when Ransom plays closer to the LOS. | 2nd |
4. | Emeka Egbuka (53) | Saturday was a big day for Egbuka who had five receptions for 125 yards and a score. It is easy in the WR to get overlooked some weeks, but opposing defenses cannot overlook the senior wideout. | 8th |
5. | Tyleik Williams (43) | Tyleik did not play against Marshall with an injury and his status for this week is up in the air as of time of publication. Ohio State had the chance to rotate several players in and out, but they want to get Williams back ASAP. | 4th |
6. | Caleb Downs (42) | Downs continues to excel for the Buckeye and even though his stats sheet is not exactly filled up, his two tackles also included a PBU along the way. It just won’t be easy to quantify what is happening in the secondary until the Buckeyes face an actual passer. | 3rd |
7. | TreVeyon Henderson (40) | I am just waiting for the big Henderson game and have a feeling it is coming soon. He only had six carries against Marshall and he took it to the house twice and 76 yards. It also feels like a wheel route is coming soon to Henderson. | 7th |
8. | Seth McLaughlin (30) | As with every year that I have done this piece, there is no easy way to write about offensive linemen, the stats books don’t really have a way to measure them with just basic numerics. | NR |
9. | Josh Simmons (28) | We can continue our thought right here as Simmons and McLaughlin both make the list for the first time of the season. Things will get more challenging as the season goes on though. | NR |
10. | Denzel Burke (22) | Burke was back after a targeting call limited his action against Western Michigan. Burke had six tackles as the Buckeyes did a good job of subbing players in and out. | 9th |
11. | Will Howard (17) | Will Howard added two more touchdowns to his tally and threw for 275 yards. He did throw pick, the first turnover of the season for Ohio State, but an 80-percent completion rate is nothing to sneeze at. | 10th |
