COLUMBUS — Ohio State redshirt sophomore linebacker Gabe Powers will be entering the transfer portal.
Powers revealed the news via social media.
Powers has tallied five tackles this season, but his most memorable play came in the season opener against Akron when he returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown.
Powers has played in every game this year, but only five times this season did he see snaps on defense. He competed to be the backup middle linebacker with sophomore Arvell Reese, but lost out to Reese in camp, and Reese has since taken on a much larger role with the Buckeye defense.
Further, true freshman linebacker Payton Pierce had also matched Powers’ snaps on defense of late.
Powers will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The transfer portal does not officially open until Monday December 9, and will then close for the winter on December 28. It will open again on April 16 and close again April 25.
Powers is the first Buckeye to announce his intentions to transfer, but he will not be the last. For more on the impact of Powers’ departure, you can check out this breaking news edition of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast.
