The Buckeyes remain active in the transfer portal after their decisive 42-17 win over Tennessee over the weekend. This time the Buckeyes move back to offense and bring in former Purdue tight end Max Klare.
The redshirt sophomore signed with Purdue out of Cincinnati St. Xavier high school.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder was one of the few bright spots on the Purdue offense this past season with 51 receptions, 685 yards and four touchdowns. The Buckeyes held him largely in check with just two catches for 13 yards in Ohio State’s 45-0 win over the Boilermakers back in November.
This is a big addition for Keenan Bailey’s room with Gee Scott Jr. out of eligibility, Will Kacmarek having a decision about one more year left, and the Buckeyes looking for someone to step to the top of the room as Ohio State’s primary pass-catching tight end for 2025.
Texas, Michigan and Texas A&M were among the school that were heavily involved in this one, and despite being from the state of Ohio, many were surprised by this move.
Ohio State tight ends have found their way to the National Football League but Ohio State has not exactly been synonymous with tight end production, and why would it? Ohio State has really become Wide Receiver U over the years and there are only so many offensive plays per game.
Also returning for the Buckeyes at the tight end position will be Bennett Christian, Jelani Thurman, Max LeBlanc and incoming freshmen Nate Roberts and Brody Lennon.
The Buckeyes are set to lose more than a few impactful players from this 2024 team and Ohio State’s approach to the portal has been focused on addressing many key needs.
Is tight end a key need? That may be up for debate among a lot of people but there is no denying that Klare likely was the top tight end available in this portal period and now he is a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
We will have more on the impact of this portal addition coming soon with this breaking news.
