Ohio State has added Rice offensive tackle Ethan Onianwa via the transfer portal.
Onianwa (6-6 345) is a three-year starter for the Owls, including two years at right tackle and this past season at left tackle. He missed three games this year during the middle of the season due to an injury, but has started 34 games in his collegiate career.
Onianwa is ranked the No. 13 offensive tackle in the transfer portal per 247 Sports and will have one year remaining. Ohio State beat out Florida State, Texas A&M, and Iowa for his services. He took trips to all four schools before finally making his decision.
As a high school prospect, Onianwa had offers from schools like Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, Princeton, Arkansas State, Louisiana, and Rice. He was a three-star prospect out of Katy, Texas. He was ranked the No. 89 interior line prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, and the No. 1,463 player overall per the 247Sports Composite.
Onianwa is now the second offensive tackle the Buckeyes have brought in from the transfer portal this month. Minnesota redshirt freshman Phillip Daniels was the first. He was the Gophers’ starting right tackle this season and is expected to contend for that job with the Buckeyes in 2025.
Ohio State will be losing starting left tackle Josh Simmons and starting right tackle Josh Fryar to the NFL after this season, so filling those spots will be key to next season’s success. With Onianwa and Daniels, the Buckeyes now have a couple more options to choose from when putting next year’s offensive line together.
Buckeye Huddle will have more on the commitment of Ethan Onianwa soon.
