Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye is interviewing today for the same position with the Chicago Bears, according to a report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
Frye has been with Ohio State for the past three seasons. His current contract expires on January 31 of this year.
Even though Frye’s tenure at Ohio State has featured some highs and lows, it would be impossible not to give him high marks for continuing to piece together an offensive line that was good enough to win the national championship this season despite losing two starters and starting a total of nine different linemen.
Lackluster high school recruiting has been a criticism of Frye in his time at Ohio State, but he has been very effective recruiting out of the transfer portal. Including landing left tackle Josh Simmons out of San Diego State two years ago and Alabama center Seth McLaughlin last year. McLaughlin won the Rimington Award as the nation’s top center and Simmons is projected as a first-round draft pick this April.
The Buckeyes have also brought in a pair of highly sought after transfer tackles this winter.
This could be a part of negotiating for Frye, who showed his worth as a line coach and developer of talent this season. Or it could just be the next step in a career trajectory for a coach that wants to be in the NFL.
Buckeye Huddle will continue to follow this story.
