Ohio State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chip Kelly is leaving to become the offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
This is per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel.
Kelly was hired 51 weeks ago by Ohio State head coach Ryan Day after Bill O’Brien left the position after a couple of weeks on the job to take over as head coach at Boston College.
Kelly was instrumental in coordinating an Ohio State offense that won a national championship this past season, as well as coaching quarterback Will Howard to one of the best seasons in school history.
Howard threw for 4,010 yards with 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He completed 73% of his passes.
This will be Kelly’s third NFL job, having previously been the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. The new head coach of the Raiders is Pete Carroll.
Meanwhile, back at Ohio State, Ryan Day is still trying to replace departed defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and departed offensive line coach Justin Frye.
Having already gone through a search for a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator a year ago, Day will no doubt have a list of contenders to take over what promises to be a talented quarterback room in 2025.
Spring camp generally starts around the first Tuesday in March.
