It appears that the Buckeyes are getting close to filling their first coaching vacancy with news that the team is in negotiations with Virginia Tech coach Tyler Bowen according to a report in FootballScoop.com.
Bowen would fill the spot of Justin Frye in some capacity with Ohio State’s offensive line. Bowen currently serves as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach with the Hookies but has experience working offensive linemen.
There is a connection between Ohio State and Bowen, but it is a six-degrees of separation between the two parties. Bowen served as an assistant coach under former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
One concern through the years when talking about Ohio State’s offensive line coaches is the lack of recruiting chops. That shouldn’t be a concern here with Bowen serving as the offensive recruiting coordinator.
In addition to working at Virginia Tech, Jacksonville, and Penn State, Bowen has worked at Maryland and Fordham.
This move doesn’t really give any insight on Ryan Day’s plans for the offensive coordinator position that was left vacant with Chip Kelly moving on to the Las Vegas Raiders. There is a connection between Bowen and Akron head coach Joe Moorhead, a name that has been mentioned by some for the Ohio State OC job.
The Buckeyes will also have to fill the defensive coordinator role after Jim Knowles took the same role at Penn State.
Winning the national championship usually opens a run on assistant coaches and that certainly was the case with Ohio State having three vacancies within two weeks of hoisting the National Championship Trophy.
