Ohio State has announced a new seven-year deal for head football coach Ryan Day that will pay him an annual compensation of $12.5 million through the 2031 season.
Terms of the contract will need to be approved by the Ohio State University Board of Trustees.
The new deal adds three years to Day’s current contract and increases his pay by $2.5 million per year.
Ryan Day and the Buckeyes are coming off of a 14-2 season where they won the College Football Playoff, earning the first national title for the football program since 2014.
Day is now just one of three active head coaches with a national title, joining Georgia’s Kirby Smart and Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.
The new contract will make Day the second-highest paid head coach in the sport, behind Smart’s $13.3 million per year, and just ahead of Swinney’s $11.1 million per year.
Ryan Day holds a career record of 70-10 (.875) as a head coach, all at Ohio State. That is the highest winning percentage among active college football coaches. He was named head coach in 2019, taking over for a retiring Urban Meyer.
Day’s Buckeyes have made the College Football Playoff in four of his six seasons at Ohio State. He now holds a career 5-3 mark in the CFP.
