Ohio governor Mike DeWine has nominated former Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel to be his Lieutenant Governor for the final two years of his term.
The nomination will need to be approved by a majority of Ohio’s House and Senate, but that is not expected to be a problem.
“He has the requisite skill sets. He has the criteria that I outlined. He knows Ohio,” DeWine said at a Monday press conference. “Jim Tressel, I trust his judgment. He is a born leader.”
Tressel spent the bulk of the last 10 years as Youngstown State University president, but retired from the position one year ago.
Tressel won a BCS National Championship in 2002, which was just his second season with Ohio State. He resigned as head coach in May of 2011 following an NCAA investigation.
“[Tressel] will enable me to be assured that if something happens to me he can walk in and be governor that day,” DeWine said.
