Ryan Day Hiring Matt Patricia As New Ohio State Defensive Coordinator

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is hiring Matt Patricia as the Buckeyes’ new defensive coordinator.

The news was first reported by Dom Tiberi of WBNS-10TV in Columbus. Ohio State has confirmed the move.

Patricia has not coached in the college game since he was a graduate assistant at Syracuse from 2001-2003. He is most well known for being the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots from 2012-2017 where he was part of two Super Bowl champions.

While he was a DC, his Patriots defenses were some of the best in the NFL.

He was hired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions in 2018 but was fired in 2020 with a 13-29-1 record. Patricia then spent the next two seasons as an advisor for the New England Patriots.

He was a defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023,

Ohio State has also confirmed a promotion for secondary coach Tim Walton, who will now also be the Buckeyes’ co-defensive coordinator. Safeties coach Matt Guerrieri has been given the title of passing game coordinator.

Buckeye Huddle will have more on these moves in the coming days.
