2024 Freshman Class Report: Cornerback Aaron Scott

This is the 15th installment in a series where Buckeye Huddle looks back on each member of Ohio State’s 2024 signing class and the impact they had in their first season, as well as the impact they could have during the upcoming 2025 season. Up next is cornerback Aaron Scott.

Ohio State didn’t have to go far to land Aaron Scott, who attended Springfield High School where he was a First-Team All-State selection at cornerback as both a junior and a senior. He finished with seven interceptions over those two seasons. As a senior in 2023, Scott also played quarterback and helped lead his team to the state championship game.

Scott was ranked the No. 1 player in Ohio and the No. 6 cornerback in the 2024 class overall. He was the No. 36 player in the 247Sports Composite and ranked a five-star prospect. He signed with Ohio State over offers from Michigan, Oregon, USC, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and a dozen others.

2024 Season

Aaron Scott was one of six outside cornerbacks who played last year for the Buckeyes. He played in seven games, including the first five games of the season. An injury midway through the season cost him some time, but he did get some snaps on defense in the College Football Playoff game against Tennessee.

Scott finished his freshman season with two tackles and one pass breakup. He moved up to the No. 4 cornerback over the course of the season, passing second-year player Calvin Simpson-Hunt. Simpson-Hunt has since transferred out.

So Now What For Aaron Scott?

There is a lot to like about Aaron Scott. He has the length that coaches look for at the position, and he has the confidence and demeanor to go along with his physical attributes. The Buckeyes must replace departed starter Denzel Burke, which will likely be done by junior Jermaine Mathews.

Mathews pushed his way into the rotation last year as a sophomore. Scott will have that same opportunity this year. Cornerbacks coach Tim Walton will look to play as many guys as he can, so if Scott continues his progression, there is no reason to think that he won’t see the field this year in some capacity.

Ohio State is planning for a long season, so depth will be on the menu for the Buckeyes. Aaron Scott’s presence will benefit this current iteration of the OSU defense, but how much remains to be seen.
