COLUMBUS — The Buckeyes were back on the field Wednesday for their second spring practice of the year. There were no sweeping changes from Monday’s first spring practice, though the third-teamers did get more work in the one-hour viewing window provided to the media than they did on Monday.
At quarterback, redshirt freshman Julian Sayin and redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz took turns going first throughout the various drills. Kienholz had a good day with his accuracy, though there were no strenuous throws while the media was on hand.
Kienholz did stand out during the “one-inch drill,” which is where the quarterbacks throw passes to a receiver, but the passes must just skim over the top of a mobile fence/net that is placed between the QB and the receiver. The net is meant to replicate an intermediate defender in coverage, so the closer to the net without hitting, the better because there is also an imaginary defender closing on the receiver. If the ball is lofted, it’s going to be broken up. If it is too flat, it will get knocked down by the net.
Kienholz was consistently the closest to the top of the net, as you can see in the video below.
Teach Time
Spring practice is a time for teaching, and that doesn’t just mean coaches teaching players. Redshirt sophomore receiver Brandon Inniss was frequently seen coaching up the younger receivers. At one point, he was helping freshman Phillip Bell on blocking. Later he was making sure Bell and fellow freshman slot receiver De’zie Jones was running a route properly.
On defense, there was a portion of practice where junior safety Caleb Downs and freshman Faheem Delane were paired together. Downs was helping him throughout the drill.
During another 11-on-11 alignment drill, if somebody did something wrong, a coach would blow the play dead and they’d have to huddle up again and correct the mistake.
Emptying The Notebook
+ There were no changes to the first-team offensive line, but the second team lined up like this for a handful of drills: LT Ethan Onianwa, LG Devontae Armstrong, C Joshua Padilla, RG Gabe VanSickle, RT Phillip Daniels.
