Ohio State football history is littered with wide receivers whose most notable moments came in the Buckeyes’ annual spring game, but there’s no need to expect that with redshirt freshman receiver Mylan Graham.
Graham led the Buckeyes with four receptions for 104 yards in Saturday’s spring game, which also included a 51-yard catch-and-run touchdown that allowed him to show his speed and ability to make defenders miss.
His performance wasn’t a huge surprise. Graham was a former five-star signee in 2024, after all. Recruiting rankings aren’t the be-all, end-all, but Graham’s ability to make plays has never been in question.
Graham improved over the course of his freshman season, but being a June enrollee last year, his development was slow going. This year, Graham was able to take part in his first spring camp as a Buckeye, and it paid dividends according to OSU head coach Ryan Day.
“Huge, huge. He’s another guy who just needs to play football,” Day said after the spring game. “His route running is excellent. His athleticism is excellent. His attention to detail is excellent. The biggest thing with Mylan has been just finishing the catches, which you saw him do some today.”
Graham has made plays throughout spring ball. He’s been a frequent target of the Buckeye quarterbacks and has shown an ability to make difficult catches. Graham came on late last year in practice, but he’s now much closer to being in a position to impact football games this year for the Buckeyes.
Provided he continues to be strong and consistent as a finisher.
“That’s been his emphasis, finish contested catches, catch it clean, and then put the ball away,” Day said. “He had a big run after the catch. That ball was loose. You could see it. So he’s going to learn to tighten that up. But I think he has a bright future here.”
Mylan Graham himself has detailed the difficulties of his true freshman season, as well as how he was able to grow and improve. It takes time to get comfortable with being both a college student and a college football player. Being a wide receiver at Ohio State is not for everybody, but Graham is showing more and more that he has a very bright future as a Buckeye.
“I think he’s grown,” Day said. “He’s gotten better. He’s serious about his work. He knows what he has to work on, but he has all the tools it takes to be the next great one.”
