The Buckeyes have added another quarterback to the roster as Houston Christian’s Eli Brickhandler announced he has transferred to Ohio State.
Brickhandler (6-2 195) broke the news via social media.
Brickhandler was a redshirt sophomore last year at Houston Christian where he played in eight games, completing 38-of-77 passes (.494) for 557 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 264 yards and a touchdown.
Brickhandler transferred to Houston Christian last year after spending his first two years of college ball at North Carolina A&T. He redshirted as a true freshman at A&T, and then as a sophomore he completed 28-of-56 attempts for 354 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions while also rushing 43 times for 176 yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Originally from Stockton, California, Brickhandler was a three-year starter at Pittsburg High School.
Sources have indicated to Buckeye Huddle that Brickhandler will be on scholarship this season. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day prefers to have at least four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, and they have now hit that number as Brickhandler joins redshirt sophomore Lincoln Kienholz, redshirt freshman Julian Sayin, and true freshman Tavien St. Clair.
Before spring ball began, OSU quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler was asked if the Buckeyes would seek out a fourth quarterback via the transfer portal.
“That’s still in conversation,” Fessler told Buckeye Huddle at the time. “We’ll kind of see how it goes. Obviously three is a little bit less than we typically have, but they’re three that we’re really confident in right now.”
Brickhandler has two years of eligibility remaining.
