Minnesota senior forward Jamison Battle is transferring to Ohio State.
Battle (6-7 225) has been a double-digit scorer in each of his previous four years in college. Last year for the Gophers, he averaged 12.4 points per game. The year before, however, he scored 17.5 points per game for Minnesota.
In the days leading up to the 2022-2023 season, Battle had foot surgery, which could explain a bit of the drop in production.
Battle began his career at George Washington, where he spent his first two years. As a freshman, he scored 11.8 points per game and grabbed 5.2 rebounds per game.
The numbers increased as a sophomore, when Battle averaged 17.3 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game, while shooting .588 from two-point range and .354 from three-point territory.
In Battle’s first year at Minnesota in 2021-2022, he increased his scoring average to 17.5 points per game with 6.3 rebounds per game. He shot .366 from three and .534 inside the arc. He scored in double figures in all but two games that season. He posted a season-high 39 points in a loss at Maryland towards the end of the regular season.
The consistency dipped this past season, where Battle failed to score in double figures 10 times, including going scoreless in a loss to Purdue early in the season.
His season-high point total this past season was 31 points in a loss at Illinois.
For the Buckeyes, Battle will replace some of the minutes departed forwards Justice Sueing and Brice Sensabaugh. If Battle can get back to his previous form, the Buckeyes could have one of the top scorers in the Big Ten.
If he can’t, they’ll still have a veteran forward who can shoot from deep and rebound, while also providing versatility in the defensive frontcourt.
