COLUMBUS — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with reporters following a Gray 40-31 win over the Scarlet in OSU’s 2023 Spring Game. What went well, what didn’t, and what needs to wait for more video review? Day answered a number of questions. The highlights of everything can be found below.
- What they saw today from the QBs is what they’ve seen at times in practice. Not having a bunch of receivers out there isn’t going to help. The QBs improved over the spring.
- The secondary is moving faster and making more plays.
- Chip Trayanum will stay at running back this year. He has added weight and can carry it with speed.
- It was fun watching Archie Griffin. “The offense needed a little help” so they went to the bullpen and called on 45.
- The offensive line was inconsistent today. The good news is the defense is effective.
- They were vanilla on offense and defense today. No blitzes. Today was about consistency.
- You take everything into consideration when grading Kyle McCord today. Wasn’t always a clean pocket. Top receivers were out. Etc. But he made some downfield throws that this offense is about.
- There has been some leadership that carried over from last year. They will have leaders and draft some squads for the leaders to lead over the summer. That will give them a good idea of who the captains will be.
- Kyle McCord and Devin Brown both have strong arms.
- “I don’t know if I’m concerned about the D-line.” They need to continue to build depth. The starters have to play great though. They have quite a few guys who can be difference makers.
- CJ Hicks is flashing more. Still needs to continue working with consistency, but what they saw today is a lot of what they’ve seen during camp.
