The Buckeyes have gone to the portal to bring a native Ohioan home with the addition of Dale Bonner, a 6-foot-2, 170-pounder from Baylor. The Shaker Heights (Ohio) native started his career at Fairmont State before heading to Baylor and now heads back to Columbus and the Buckeyes.
Bonner averaged 4.7 points per game, 2.7 assists, 1.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals in action for the Bears last season in the Big 12 conference. Bonner has played in 60 games total over the course of the last two seasons, all with Baylor. Of those 60 games, 54 of them were with Bonner coming off the bench.
This will give a young Ohio State team a player who has played a good amount of basketball as an entrant who will have one year to play one year with no further years of eligibility remaining.
Bonner is listed as a combo guard so he could give the Buckeyes minutes in support of their Bruce Thornton, Roddy Gayle or Taison Chatman for the 2023-24 season.
The Buckeyes went to the portal once already this season in grabbing Jamison Battle from Minnesota. Battle is a small forward that has been a double-digit scorer in all four years of college play but saw his average scoring drop about five points a game in 2022-23 and is looking to regain his old form with a change of scenery.
