Ohio State freshman receiver Noah Rogers and freshman defensive tackle Kayden McDonald had their black stripes removed following Saturday’s scrimmage. The removal of the black stripe from a new Buckeye’s helmet signifies that they have done enough in practice to be recognized as full-fledged members of the team.
Rogers was one of the top receiver recruits in the nation this past year out of Rolesville High School in North Carolina. He finished his high school career with over 3,200 yards receiving, which included a junior season where he caught 70 passes for 1,432 yards and 22 touchdowns.
Rogers was an early enrollee for the Buckeyes, which means he was able to participate in spring football. He caught a juggling touchdown pass for the Buckeyes in the spring game back in April.
In fall camp, Rogers has already impressed with his playmaking abilities.
Kayden McDonald has impressed as well. The 6-foot-2 319-pound defensive tackle stands out even among OSU’s current defensive line.
McDonald attended North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia, where he was four-star prospect. In his final two seasons at Gwinnett, he finished with 98 tackles for loss and over 30 sacks. That includes a playoff game where he finished with seven sacks.
Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is always looking for defensive linemen who can get into the backfield, which is where McDonald spent most of his high school career.
The Buckeyes have now had eight members of their 21-person signing class in 2023 lose their black stripes.
