Ohio State fourth-year junior defensive back Cameron Martinez is expected to enter the transfer portal after the portal opens on Monday, December 4.
Buckeye Huddle can confirm the news, which was first reported by Rivals.com’s Jeremy Birmingham.
Martinez was a 4-star prospect out of Muskegon, Michigan who played in one game in 2020 before redshirting.
A dynamic high school quarterback, Martinez came to Ohio State to play defense and has spent most of his time as a nickel back for the Buckeyes. Martinez started two games in 2021 as a redshirt freshman and also recorded his only career interception — which he returned for a 61-yard touchdown.
Martinez posted a career-high 23 tackles in 2021. He finished with 15 tackles last year, and posted two tackles this season while playing in just three games.
Because the 2020 season does not count against an athlete’s eligibility, the 2023 season will be treated as a redshirt season for Martinez and he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Given his past and his skill set, he could end up on offense or defense at his next stop.
