Ryan Day and Chip Kelly will be working in the same building again for the first time since 2016 when Day was Kelly’s quarterbacks coach with the San Francisco 49ers.
Per a report from FOXSports’ Bruce Feldman, Kelly is expected to be hired by Day to be Ohio State’s offensive coordinator following the departure of Bill O’Brien to Boston College.
Kelly is currently the head coach at UCLA, so this would be an unusual move but no longer surprising given today’s college football climate.
Kelly and Day go all the way back to Day’s college years as a quarterback at New Hampshire where Kelly was the offensive coordinator. Day’s first coaching job was then at New Hampshire as the tight ends coach in 2002.
The duo paired up again in 2015 when Kelly was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. He hired Day to coach the quarterbacks. Day then followed him one year later to San Francisco.
Kelly has been one of the foremost offensive minds in college football over the past 20 years. He spent six years at Oregon, including the last four as head coach before heading to the NFL. Kelly returned to college football in 2018 when he accepted UCLA’s head coaching position.
Ohio State has not yet confirmed the move, though Kelly has reportedly told his team that he will no longer be the head coach at UCLA.
Buckeye Huddle will have much more on this move in the coming days.
