BRADENTON, Fla. – Southern Swing made its way down to IMG Academy and that meant a chance to catch up with Ohio State commit London Merritt.
The defensive lineman transferred from Woodward Academy in Atlanta to the powerhouse national program and got his first real taste of action in the annual spring game.
In a program where the nation goes to land top talent, being a commit to any one school isn’t always a big deal, but Ohio State’s brand name is about as big as they get, and Merritt has enjoyed having the process over with.
“Just having that name and all the pressure is like gone,” Merritt said. “I don’t really have to worry aboutvall the other colleges that have been recruiting me and things like that. So,vbeing known as Ohio State… Buckeye… is top notch and I love it.”
The Buckeyes already have quite a duo in the class with Merritt and Zahir Mathis, but there are plenty of other big names out there that the Buckeyes are pursuing, and Merritt is doing his part to surround himself with talent as the defensive line room gets older and older and will need a major addition of young talent.
But Merritt is not just satisfied with recruiting his own position and has a more “all over” approach.
“(I am recruiting) Deuce Geralds, Tyler Atkinson, David Sanders, Jaime Ffrench,” Merritt said. “I’m recruiting a lot of players.”
Ohio State will not have to wait too long to get Merritt back up to Columbus as he is set to take his official visit June 14th through the 16th. Look for Merritt to have his recruiting pitch down by then. Starting with IMG Academy teammate Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, who will be visiting the same weekend.
“I’ve been telling (him) Ohio State is the life changing place and it’s better than all the other colleges he’s looking at,” Merritt said. “We can be roommates and stuff like that when we get there.”
