COLUMBUS — Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with reporters following the Buckeyes’ 49-14 win over Marshall on Saturday. He discussed the outstanding performance from running back Quinshon Judkins and the continuing development of the offensive line and defense. The highlights of everything Day had to say can be found below.
- The offense wanted to play fast today, but when you do that and create explosives or turn the ball over, you can put your defense in a tough position.
- “Tyleik (Williams) will be day to day.”
- On the kickoffs out of bounds: “I didn’t really get into it.” They’ll evaluate him and see if maybe he tweaked a hip. “Either way, we can’t have that.” That puts the defense in a terrible situation. “That’s completely ridiculous.” You want to let somebody play through a struggle like that but only for so long.
- On Day’s penalty: There was 21 seconds on the clock when OSU subbed in and Marshall was “really, really, really slow” on subbing. “I didn’t curse but I was raising my voice.” “I guess I yelled too loud. I’m not sure why, but I guess that’s what happened.”
- Marshall did a nice job with their style of play by creating numbers. The pluses for an offense is that they are +1 against a defense. The minus is that your quarterback takes shots.
- He’ll have to look closer at Caden Curry’s targeting.
- You saw the athleticism of the offensive line on receiver screens and the long runs from the RBs. “I think Donovan (Jackson) being back in there helped a lot.” Having Will Howard being a threat in the running game always changes the numbers.
- All three RBs ran hard. “They all have special abilities. They’re unselfish. They don’t care who gets the credit.”
- On the interception: “We took a shot early and we’ve got to clean that up a little bit. There’s some things that we can do better there and coach it better.”
- How do you feel heading into conference play? You don’t know until you see it, but it’s not like they don’t go against good players in practice.
- The execution on the Jeremiah Smith touchdown pass was very good. Will Howard made good read and reactions on that play. It was a sight adjustment because they did not have the nickel picked up on that play.
- What have you learned about Quinshon Judkins? “I just appreciate how hard he plays.” He has home-run ability. He runs low. He has a great attitude. “You can coach Quinshon hard.” He appreciates being coached hard because he knows the coaches are trying to make him better. “He’s been nothing but a great teammate so far.”
- Thoughts on the defensive tackles without Tyleik Williams? “I gotta watch it and figure it out. I feel like it’s a mixed bag coming out of the game.”
- On Austin Siereveld getting playing time at right guard with Tegra Tshabola: “I liked seeming them both play. I think they both deserve to play.” He likes giving a guy a break if needed but not at the cost of losing consistency.
- “Seth [McLaughlin] has done a great job of getting everybody on the same page. He’s like having an NFL center in there.” He has answers or will get it fixed. In-game, he’s talking to the guys and getting things adjusted.
