COLUMBUS – Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, alongside his family, hosted the Trust Downs Foundation’s inaugural Driving Hope Classic at Top Golf on Monday, giving back to his adopted community. A portion of the event’s proceeds will support programs addressing homelessness, providing shelter, essential resources, and pathways to long-term stability.
Caleb was joined by his older brother, Josh Downs of the Indianapolis Colts, their parents, current Ohio State football team members, and coaching staff. The event also featured a silent auction to benefit the charitable causes mentioned.
“Homelessness is a huge cause and a huge thing in America, so we feel like with the resources that we’ve been blessed with, we can just help give back to the community in any way possible,” Josh Downs said. “Caleb’s huge here in Columbus, and the Huckleberry House is new, and he wants to give back, and we want to give back as best as possible. So, we’re doing this to just show our thanks to the community, and just a good way to give back.”
Huckleberry House serves as a vital resource for homeless and at-risk youth, offering temporary housing, a 24/7 crisis shelter, and counseling services.
“I’ve spent time at Huckleberry House, donated to them before, so I’m just hoping that they can do what they need to do with whatever funds that we’re able to give them, and help people that are in need,” Caleb Downs added.
Naturally, bringing two football-playing brothers together led to some talk about the game. Josh was careful not to inflate his younger brother’s ego but praised Caleb’s development.
“He’s probably one of the best safeties in college football, if not the best, in his first season,” Josh said. “Now it’s about solidifying that role, elevating his game this season—hopefully his last in college—and carrying that to the next level.”
The brothers’ competitive spirit extends beyond the football field to the golf course, where Josh admitted Caleb has the upper hand. Their strong bond has always driven them toward shared goals.
“It was mostly getting bullied by my big brother,” Caleb joked. “That toughened me up as a kid. Watching how he succeeded and learned from his failures shaped who I am today. As a younger sibling, that gave me knowledge and wisdom to grow faster than most.”
