The Iowa defense has long been renowned for its fundamentally sound, split-safety scheme. This has again been true this season, as the Hawkeyes have operated the best defense in the country according to ESPN Bill Connelly’s SP+.
But Hawkeye defensive coordinator Phil Parker confounded Ohio State on Saturday by eschewing that cover-4 based scheme.
Ryan Day on what Iowa did against the OSU offense: "They typically play a ton of quarters … saw a lot more pressure, saw a lot more single high." Day says "it took a few drives to get it recognized."
