Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka has been putting together a quality 2022 season and it has been noticed by the Paul Hornung Award as the young wideout has been named one of four finalists. The award is given to the nation’s most versatile player by the Louisville Sports Commission.
He is joined by Jack Colletto (Oregon State), Jahmyr Gibbs (Alabama) and Will Shipley (Clemson) for the award.
The Paul Hornung Award is a relatively new award, first introduced after the 2010 season with players like Tavon Austin, Odell Beckham Jr., Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith all winning the award in previous seasons. No Ohio State player has ever won the award.
This is one of the rare awards that is open to both offensive and defensive players (primarily) and according the to the criteria, players will be measured by one or more of the following:
- Playing multiple positions on offense and/or multiple positions on defense
- Playing a significant role on special teams
- Performing as a two-way player who starts either on offense or defense and is used on the other side of the ball in some capacity
- Making a significant impact during big games and elevating the team’s performance through leadership displayed by excelling in multiple roles
Egbuka is second on the Ohio State team in receptions (49), receiving yards (794) and receiving touchdowns (7). Egbuka also has eight rushing attempts for 80 yards and two touchdowns along with nine credited punt returns and a kick return.
The Buckeyes are certainly hoping that Egbuka continues to add to all of those totals with three more regular season games left to play, starting with a home game against Indiana this weekend (12pm – FOX).
