The Buckeyes took a hit in their class of 2024 with the decommitment of quarterback Dylan Raiola, the consensus No. 1 product in the entire class of 2024. The news of the decommitment was first confirmed by Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports.
Ohio State made waves in May when the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder committed to the Buckeyes so early in the process. That move gave the Buckeyes a solid starting point for the class of 2024, players who are still more than a year away from signing their National Letters of Intent.
The Scottsdale (Ariz.) product threw for more than 2,400 yards during his junior season of football to go with 24 touchdowns against just five interceptions.
During the recruitment of Raiola, the Buckeyes were also considered one of the favorites to land Jadyn Davis out of Charlotte (N.C.) but Raiola made his decision before the Buckeyes were able to get further down the road with Davis. Teams like Michigan, North Carolina, Penn State and Tennessee are all near the top of Davis’ list. The question will be if Ohio State can get back into that sweepstakes or if that ship has sailed.
It has been a wild run at quarterback for the Buckeyes with a recent decommitment in the class of 2023 when Brock Glenn left the Ohio State class to later commit to Florida State. The Buckeyes answered that move with flipping Pierre (S.D.) quarterback Lincoln Kienholz from Washington to Ohio State.
The quarterback room in 2023 for Ohio State will likely be without C.J. Stroud who is now draft eligible and has two years as a starter under his belt. Ohio State will have to see what comes from a battle between Kyle McCord, Devin Brown and Kienholz for the 2023 season, all before any class of 2024 quarterback could ever enter the conversation.
One thing is for certain, Ohio State will be in the market for a 2024 quarterback, as it is imperative to take one every single season. Whoever joins the Buckeyes will have a talented room of receivers to throw to, including recent commit Jeremiah Smith from the class of 2024, the consensus No. 2 player in the nation out of Chaminade-Madonna high school in South Florida.
Fortunately for Ohio State, there is a lot of time to figure things out, be it a player like Davis or going after another player at the position. QB recruiting has been one of the few constants at Ohio State as long as Ryan Day has been there and things should not be any different moving forward, no matter how much the loss of Raiola will hurt Ohio State fans in the short term.
