COLUMBUS — Ohio State redshirt freshman cornerback Jakailin Johnson has entered the transfer portal. The news was first reported by Pat Murphy of 247Sports. Ohio State has confirmed Johnson’s intention to transfer.
Johnson started five games for the Buckeyes this season and played the second-most snaps among the Ohio State cornerbacks. He finished with 20 tackles and played in every game this year for OSU.
Johnson came to Ohio State from DeSmet High School in St. Louis, Missouri where he was a 4-star prospect and the No. 3 cornerback in the 2021 recruiting class.
The Buckeyes were expected to have a cornerback competition this spring that involved Johnson, as well as classmates Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock. Instead, Burke and Hancock will go into spring as the overwhelming favorites to win the starting jobs, assuming Cameron Brown does not come back for a sixth season.
Jyaire Brown started a game this year as a true freshman and saw snaps throughout the season. He will also be involved in the battle for competition. Ohio State.
The Buckeyes have signed a pair of cornerbacks in the 2023 class as well in Texas prospect Calvin Simpson-Hunt and Ohio prospect Jermaine Mathews.
