According to a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren will forego the rest of his collegiate eligibility and head to the NFL. Warren will reportedly take over as the Chicago Bears’ new president/CEO.
Warren came to the Big Ten from the NFL where he was part of the Minnesota Vikings organization. In 2019, the Big Ten announced that Warren would eventually take over for commissioner Jim Delany. Delany then retired a bit earlier than expected, putting Warren in charge in January of 2020 just as the COVID-19 pandemic was about to get underway in the United States.
Warren’s first year will always be known for being part of the decision-making process to cancel the 2020 Big Ten football season. That decision didn’t last, but it lasted long enough to leave an indelible mark on both the conference and Warren’s legacy.
The Big Ten has not yet confirmed the news, but this has been the rumored move for a couple of weeks now.
What is next for the Big Ten? There will be no shortage of candidates to take over one of the most powerful and desirable entities in sports.
What is next for Warren is that he will reportedly take over a team with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and his franchise quarterback is Justin Fields, who is also the same player who campaigned against the Big Ten’s decision to cancel the 2020 season while a quarterback at Ohio State.
