Dorian Brew Building Relationships In Search For College Home

Dorian Brew is the top-ranked prospect in the state of Ohio for the class of 2025, and on Thursday at OSU’s first one-day camp of June, he showed why.

Working exclusively at defensive back, and being put through his paces by Ohio State cornerbacks coach Tim Walton, the 6-foot-2 Brew showed a fluidity that is rare for defensive backs his size. That’s why even though some schools are recruiting him as an “athlete,” Brew believes his future is at cornerback.

“I’m getting recruited as an athlete, but I feel like my potential is highest at DB,” Brew said following his camp performance. “There’s not a lot of DBs my size and my speed, so I feel like I can make my money at DB.”

Brew is currently ranked the No. 32 player in the 2025 class and the No. 3 cornerback overall. Following his sophomore season, this past winter and spring have seen him add offers from Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Tennessee, Penn State, Oklahoma, and Oregon.

The Buckeyes may have a couple of advantages that the other schools will have to overcome, however. The first is that Brew plays at Clayton Northmont High School, just outside of Dayton, Ohio. The second is that his mom — Donica Merriman — is an Ohio State Hall of Fame track athlete.

“I grew up watching Ohio State,” Brew said. “My mom, she ran track. She’s in the Hall of Fame at Ohio State. It’s one of my dream schools for the longest. It’s crazy that I’m getting recruited and I’m building that great relationship with Coach Walton.”

That relationship-building has been ongoing, and going well.

“He knows what he’s doing. He’s a great coach, great guy,” Brew said of Walton. “He’s hard on the technique. He emphasizes that a lot. That’s what I like about him. I focus on my technique. That’s what I work on a lot. He does that too, so I feel like that’s a great match for me.”

Despite the Ohio — and Ohio State — ties, Brew is looking for something more than a geographical fit. And with parents who have been dedicated athletes — his father Derrick Brew was also an Olympic Gold Medalist — he understands that relationships and development are going to be the real keys.

“I’m looking for a place that develops cornerbacks. I want that relationship with the coach, someone that can maximize my potential,” he said. “I look at the guys that they develop. The amount of guys they develop, and who they develop, and where they’re at right now.”

Brew doesn’t have a recruiting timetable at the moment. He’s simply taking everything in and getting a feel for every school that he visits.
